<A Fountain Head>

Location: Brooklyn, NY
Year: 2020
60’(w) x 84’(d) x 39”(h)
Materials: concrete, chrome pipes, soil, living plants, clay, hose bibb

Character-like clay gestures march along floating concrete pedestals toward what seems to be the source of life on the wall: a hose bibb - the fountain head.

The title <A Fountain Head> references Ayn Rand’s novel <The Fountainhead> which depicts a young avant-garde architect who strives against conventional design methods. It was my commentary against the young architects of my generation who would rather “stand on the shoulders of giants” and follow the pedagogies of prominent practitioners instead of coming up with original, authentic ideas.
